Enjoy a Mountain Playground as a Palmer AK Resident

Each season offers something spectacular in Hatcher Pass. Spring brings snowmelt, sparkling waterfalls, and muddy but exciting trails. Fall arrives with crisp air, yellow tundras, berry picking, and the kinds of scenery that makes you take up photography as a hobby. Of course, with winter’s arrival, there’s no shortage of snowboarding, backcountry skiing, and plenty of other winter activities.

There is a great selection of trails for different skill levels, from family fun to serious climbers. One of the easier options for families and newer hikers is Gold Cord Lake. Starting near the historic Independence Mine – which is also available for an easy walk – this trail leads you up to the stunning lake tucked amid the impressive mountain terrain. 

April Bowl, which climbs right above Hatcher Pass is a great hike that serves up incredible views without overwhelming you physically, though it has some steep sections for a challenge. It’s not a day-long trek, yet still rewards you with panoramic valley views, alpine lakes, ridgeline views, and wildflowers and berry picking in season.

Gold Mint Trail, which follows an old mining road into Mint Valley, is a long-distance hike, but is more manageable than some of the other longer, steeper hikes. This is a great spot for trail running and backpacking, not to mention a great place for spotting wildlife, as well as taking in the beautiful alpine meadows, valleys and river crossings.

Finally, there’s Reed Lake Trail, one of the most famous trails in Hatcher Pass and southcentral Alaska. Much of the trail is a gradual climb, but there’s some serious boulder field scrambling at some points. The payoff is worth it for the incredible views throughout, including waterfalls, alpine valley views, historic mining remains, and a beautiful turquoise lake just beneath the mountain peaks.
