Palmer or Wasilla? How to Choose the Right Mat-Su Community for Your Lifestyle
As a Wasilla home builder, we also build in Palmer, because the two cities are just 10 miles apart and each roughly 40 miles from Anchorage, making them attractive locations for a variety of potential home buyers moving to the Mat-Su Valley. However, there are a few differences to consider in order to find the one that’s the best fit for your particular lifestyle.
One of the biggest points to consider is if you’re looking for a more centralized town with lots of nearby conveniences, as you’ll find in Palmer, or are you looking for somewhere you can spread out and bit more and enjoy the tranquility and enjoyment of nature where Wasilla tends to excel? It’s not a case of one being better than the other, just a case of one being better suited to your particular lifestyle.
Palmer
Palmer is just a little over 5 square miles and is a more centralized, walkable location. It has a historic downtown area, which includes residential options as well as shopping, dining, etc., but also has some residential options along the more rural edges of town, where you’ll find our new homes that range from three-quarter acre to three full acres. Palmer is a charming, family-friendly town with a strong sense of community, all complemented by stunning mountain views.
If you’re looking for a small-town atmosphere with social engagement, Palmer could be ideal for you. As well as the Palmer Historic District and the many civic spaces, there are a number of popular regular events, ranging from the Friday Fling market to the Alaska State Fair, a hugely popular attraction. Of course, you’re still in Alaska, so there’s no shortage of outdoor activities and entertainment, such as the Matanuska River Park, Palmer-Moose Creek Trail, Palmer Pool, and other parks, trails, golf courses, and a variety of other recreation options.
Wasilla
Wasilla, on the other hand, is 13 square miles and has a convenient, but more road-oriented layout. You’ll still find small-town charm, but there’s a greater emphasis on business. Along with plenty of retail options and services, Wasilla is a transportation link, including an airport, rail, and major roads. The city also serves as Mat-Su’s financial center.
Yet for all the business emphasis, there’s still a significant emphasis on nature and outdoor recreation, including fishing, hiking, and skiing. You’ll also find public amenities and recreation options that include Brett Memorial Ice Arena, Alcantra Sports Complex, Volunteer Park, Wasilla Pool, and the borough libraries. Housing leans more toward subdivisions offering more space, including estate-sized lots, as well as a broader choice of housing options. We currently build in Stone Creek and Crystal Forest communities, with a new community coming soon.
