Palmer is located in the Mat-Su Valley, which is actually two Valleys: the Matanuska Valley and the Susitna Valley. They were formed thousands of years ago, when glaciers carved the two valleys, which has created a fascinating area, ranging from rich soil to gold, not to mention the stunning scenery.
In the 1930s, more than 200 settlers from the Midwest moved to Palmer to take advantage of the excellent soil and turned Palmer into Alaska’s agricultural hub. Today, their hard work is recognized with Colony Days in mid-June, during which there’s a parade, farmers market, kids activities, and much more. Then in mid-December, there’s Colony Christmas, in which this picturesque town plays host to a parade of lights, sleigh rides, and more, as well as local artisans selling their homemade items, which are perfect for gifts!
If you’re new to the area, make the most of the downtown visitor’s center to learn about various events and attractions and pick up a downtown walking map to help you learn more about this charming town, such as the restored Colony House Museum from 1935, where you can appreciate the historic architecture and learn more about the history of the 1930s settlers.
Consider stopping by on a Friday for the Friday Fling, a farmer’s market held just across the street from the visitor’s center. It runs 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., each Friday, from mid-May to mid-August and it’s a great way to sample and purchase fresh vegetables, flowers and other goods produced by local Alaskans. Be sure to look for the Alaska Grown logo to know you’re getting the freshest! Some of the produce you definitely want to try are the locally grown carrots, potatoes, onions, beets, kale, and tomatoes, as well as berries and fruits.
Palmer is also home to the Alaska State Fair, running from late August and finishing on Labor Day. As well as rides, food, and other fun, you can see some of the record-breaking vegetables grown in the area, thanks in part to the wealth of summer sunlight!
